The company was created in 1964 with production capacity of 200 tonnes of pulp a day. In 1994, negotiations led to a takeover by the Italian Burgo Group. It first assumed control of the paper division then of the paper pulp unit. In 2001, €145 million were invested in the site. The Burgo and Marchi groups merged in 2004. The new group has 13 production units and production capacity of about 3,000,000 tonnes of paper.

Water and forests are closely tied to production levels. In fact, an engineering specialty used to call for “Water and Forest Engineers”.

Forests are like sponges. They limit flooding and their presence helps reduce erosion. They are filters that help to transform nitrates into nitrogen which is, of course, reused by the trees, completing the cycle. Forests work like pumps and increase humidity in the air, helping to create the forest atmosphere.

One of my main priorities is to track the changes taking place in the housing market and ensure that we are part of a future that is productive for the company.

Our group registered the "TOMWOOD” brand to differentiate us from traditional “THOMAS & PIRON” construction in the eyes of the general public.

The "wood-frame" building market is in full expansion and now accounts for about 15% of all houses built in the French-speaking region.

We couldn’t ignore this change in mind-set.

“Notice to anyone wanting to find work in the wood industry. Companies are looking for people. Doors are opening…” Of course, you’ll need to get solid training in the field, find out what’s going on in the world by joining an Erasmus programme for example and, ideally, learning several languages. Training programmes are available across the wood industry: in farming, sawmills, processing and business and at both the primary and secondary levels. A young person who wants to work in the wood industry can take courses on a full-time basis or on a work-study basis (with IFAPME, for example). It’s important to further develop the technical aspects of qualifications.

The purpose of the Valbiom association is to promote all non-food uses of biomass in line with the principles of sustainable development. This includes energy and “bio-based” products such as the use of vegetable oil for chainsaws and hemp for insulating panels. These new industries help to diversify farmers’ sources of income.

"Society’s expectations for forests are growing. The wood market has become globalised and wood movements are very significant. At the European level, the requirement to produce 20% renewable energy by 2020 has led to the implementation of financing mechanisms for the producers of green energy. Biomass is a significant source of renewable energy. These financing mechanisms therefore inevitably lead to additional pressure on the market and penalise other, more interesting, outlets for wood, particularly in terms of employment.

Climate change, which is said to be inevitable, is another concern for those involved in the forestry industry. Which species can we still plant, knowing that trees planted today will reach maturity in 60 to 180 years? Will our indigenous species still be in place in a century?
